QUICK TEMPERAMENT TEST

First, some things to know:

• It’s not really a “test,” as much as it is a VERY QUICK look at your natural strengths and innate tendencies.
• While you are likely to see some of yourself in all four, pick the two that are MOST LIKE YOU, MOST OF THE TIME.
• The four are two sets of complementary but opposite temperaments. You are a combination of one in each set.
• Don’t worry about the weaknesses . . . you only tend to these when you’re stressed, tired, hurting, or carrying trauma wounds.
• You are much more complex than this, but let this be the beginning of a deeper understanding and appreciation of who God made you.

PHLEGMATIC
Reactions are Careful * Slow

Usually well-liked by all.  Gets along with nearly everyone. Stable, steady, consistent, reliable, considerate, tolerant, thoughtful, adaptable, kind, friendly, easy-going, dedicated, single-minded, determined, loving, patient, forgiving, and peaceful. Quiet and observing until ready to talk or take charge and then can be quite outspoken. Well-rounded, balanced leader. Hard-working at the assigned or chosen task, controlled, obliging,  inoffensive, mediator, listener, contented, pleasant, dry humor. Careful and thoughtful in responding, but sometimes a little too slow. When uncomfortable or in unfamiliar territory, may tend to get overwhelmed, forget, freeze, avoid, go quiet, be stubborn, indecisive, hesitant,  or procrastinate.

CHOLERIC
Reactions are Firm * Fast

Good with people and one whom others often look to for direction. High-energy, outspoken, quick, decisive, loud, adventurous, confident, capable, chief, positive, bold, independent, and highly productive.  Clearly sees the big picture and can plan, delegate, and execute orders. Requires order, tenacious, daring, self-reliant, competitive, resourceful, challenger, persuasive, no-nonsense, get to the point, strong-willed, unafraid, protector, fixer. Clever humor. Quick to act but sometimes too hasty, too intense, restless, openly irritable, and rushes past important people or details.  Tends to push, when fed up can be intolerant,  rash, cold, detached, unaffectionate.

NOW PICK ONE OF THESE TWO OPPOSITES

MELANCHOLY
Reactions are Deep * Long Lasting

Self-sacrificing, high ideals, loyal, thoughtful, sensitive, curious, compassionate, cultured, creative, loves to learn, romantic, lofty principles,  deeply moved, caring, careful, concerned, serious, respectful leader, persistent, analytical, colorful, creative (dramatic, artistic, musical, or mathematical, scientific), detail-oriented, passionate, loyal, sarcastic or wry humor. Slow and careful to trust, but loyal to the death after that. Can be too pessimistic or guarded and struggles to forgive. Tends to stay stuck on the details, can be easily hurt, suspicious, a worry-wart, anxious, fussy, nit-picky, depressed, critical.

SANGUINE
Reactions are Light * Short-Lived

Highly animated, active, outgoing, sweet, child-like, playful, sociable, open, eager, spontaneous, cheerful, charming, connected, clever, inspiring leader, encouraging, unafraid, lively, popular, bouncy, quick to laughter, caring, affectionate, relatable, open, physically demonstrative (hugs, kisses, pats, taps), creative, colorful, optimistic. Silly humor. Warm and engaging but can be naive and too quick to trust.  Tends to fawn, wants the center of attention, can be loud, coarse, use inappropriate humor, shallow, permissive, whiny, quick to anger, show off,  insensitive.

Phlegmatic & Melancholy

You’re an iron fist in a velvet glove.  Your Phlegmatic part is naturally kind, well-balanced, easy to get along with, steady and hardworking, and is a strong, loyal, and faithful supporter. You bring peace to the world and you find the easy way.  BUT when you are tired, overwhelmed, or being pushed through life by the demanding Cholerics you will simply smile, dig in your heels, or disappear. Your Melancholy part is fiercely loving, passionate, rich, intense, and self-sacrificing BUT if someone ever crosses you, watch out.  The heart’s ‘inner sanctum’ is only for those who have proved they can be trusted. You may forgive but you will never forget. Remember, this barely scratches the surface of your wonderful temperament. The majority of the population is this natural combination. Your Sanguine part is sweet, sparkly, and you light up the room with your funny stories and sun-shiny smile, BUT where-oh-where have you put those car keys? Late for work and rent payments, but never late on love. Remember, this barely scratches the surface of your wonderful temperament. Your Sanguine part is sweet, sparkly, and you light up the room with your funny stories and sun-shiny smile, BUT you can completely miss what’s going on with others in the room. Want their love? Get off center stage and be more interested in others. Remember, this barely scratches the surface of your wonderful temperament. Your Melancholy part is fiercely loving, passionate, idealistic, intense, and self-sacrificing BUT your ideals and standards are so high (for yourself and others) that many feel they can never measure up. Order and perfection are your aim, but let patience and understanding be your game. And don’t forget to smell the roses. Remember, this barely scratches the surface of your wonderful temperament.
